The Heart of It: The Writer’s Residency

The Heart of It: The Writer’s Residency is an emergent program born from the growing needs of The Heart of It community. During The Heart of It’s 2-week visit to Oz Farm, 2 cabins are reserved for alumni residencies. Residencies are self-guided and can be crafted however you’d like. This is a self-guided, malleable amount of time for anything you can dream up - to work on a manuscript, curriculum, project, practice, or simply be on the 240-acre, private farm in solitude and rest. You do not have to be working on a project to apply. You may just want some solitude, a get away on the California Coast (the cabins are 2 miles from the Pacific Ocean). You may apply alone or with one joint applicant (each applicant must complete an application). Solo Residents will have a single bed cabin, and dual applicants will be placed in a 2-bed cabin. Residents are responsible for their own transportation to and from the farm, and they are responsible for their own meals. Residents can apply for 5 day, 7 day, or 13 day stays. If you’d like a different length, please indicate that on the application. Specific dates will be allotted upon acceptance. During your residency, there will be opportunities to join community if you’d like. Some options for you may be meals and conversations with Des and other facilitators, the possibility to lead a workshop with the first year cohort during your residency, a 1-on-1 with Olivia Dudding Rodriguez, and emergent collaboration with other residents and The Project Portal fellows. Upon acceptance, THOI staff will work with you to collaboratively craft your itinerary for your stay.

The Heart of It: The Writer’s Residency is open to all THOI alumni. You may apply jointly or solo. Cost is the same for solo and joint residencies.

DATES: Dates are to be determined based on applicant volume and scheduling among all programs. Dates will be given to you upon acceptance, and will fall between June 13-27, 2023.

COST:
5 day residencies: $750
7 day residencies: $850
13 day residencies: $1,500

As an emergent element for 2023, upon acceptance The Heart of It team will support you in finding and applying to funding from local arts organizations, your school, your workplace, and any other financial resources that may be available.
